Letter To The Honorable Alexis Herman

July 28, 1999

Honorable Alexis Herman
Secretary US Department of Labor
200 Constitution Ave., NW
Washington, DC 20210

Re: Trade Union Journeymen Status

Dear Secretary Herman:

The diversity, from an African American perspective, in the journeymen classification of construction trade unions is not consistent with the demographics of America. If we are to truly have equal opportunity in employment and business development; this situation will have to be directly addressed.

It would be extremely helpful if your department could supply us with the journeymen demographics, by state, of registered construction trade unions. We want to monitor the progress and inform our elected officials and other leaders.

The following is a suggested format:

Craft

State

Year

White

Black

Hisp.

Asian

Other

Total

Masons

CA

96

500

50

100

20

20

690

We would like the above information for each of the last four available years.

Your consideration and assistance in this matter is certainly appreciated. I am sending this request directly to you because the last time we requested some information from one of your divisions it took 14 months for the response. We do hope this request will take a noticeably shorter time.

We are very proud of your service and look forward to continually supporting all that you do in the attempt to "level the field".

Sincerely,

Harry C. Alford
